ABOUT THE ARTIST:

"Growing up in the South (Toney, AL), you could walk into any household and see the humongous wooden spoon and fork sets hanging in the kitchen. The symbolism behind this type of decor represents health and prosperity. As a young kid, these symbolic items become embossed in your memory and stick with you through adulthood. However, I'd never thought about making one single spoon of my own until I started working with my friend (Native American Flute Maker) Charlie Mato-Toyela, helping him with his flute business. I used to salvage odd cuts of wood or pieces that were not usable for flutes. I really had no clue what I should do with them until one of my favorite wooden spatulas broke in half. I used that spatula for stirring every time I made a sauce or cooked soups. The next week, I cut out a spoon and shaped it. I was hooked! Making a spoon from concept to completion is very therapeutic and gratifying. So, from that day on I began making spoons whenever I had a chance". - Orran Scruggs

The MaeLou Spoon Collection consists of handmade spoons made by local artist Orran Scruggs. Orran reclaims various cuts of wood from Blue Bear Flutes (a local Native American Flute making Company). Each spoon is unique in design and is created according to the wood’s unique pattern and shape. “Each piece of wood tells me what type of spoon it wants to be” explains Orran. “I make these out of love, and a spoon is a utensil that keeps serving over and over.”

These spoons can be used for stirring, measuring spices, tea, and coffee, or they can be hung as home décor.
